I think I'd feel a lot better about the whole thing if they were just straight-out about the reason and told us "Yes, we're the most technologically advanced civilization, we use a LOT of oil, and we need it, so we're going to take it. Survival of the fittest and all that..."

Sure, it'd freak the bleeding hearts, but hey, this is a game of pure survival, I wouldn't have much of a problem with it, any more than the need to kill animals and plants to eat. It's dark and terrible, but it's the rules of the game.
