Lexington, Neb. (AP) -- Lexington police are seeking a woman who
posed as a fortune teller and spiritual healer and got away with $21,500.
According to police reports, a woman who called herslef "Sister Teresa"
told an 18-year-old Lexington man that she could "read his fortune and do a
spiritual cleansing of his money and any other money that was close to him."
The man had received a card at a dance in Kearney advertising the services of a spiritual medium called Sister Teresa.
When he telephoned her, Sister Teresa told him his money was "possessed
by demons" and that she could cleanse the money for $300, reports said. But
she also said she needed at least $15,000 to perform the act.
The man told police he gave Sister Teresa $18,500 at a home June 11.
She told him it would take one day to "cleanse" the money.
He returned the next day, but the home was empty. All the furniture
had been removed.
A 34-year-old Lexington woman reported a similar experience. She told
police she gave Sister Teresa $3,000 "to rid her body of demons."
Police Chief Charlie Clark said an arrest had not been made by
Thursday. He was not optimistic that Sister Teresa would be found.
"She's gone, he said. "I have no idea (where she is)."
